New releases and upcoming appearances…

Kuzu – “Hiljaisuus” artwork by Id M Theft Able

Tashi Dorji & I have a forthcoming LP with extraordinary saxophonist and human being Dave Rempis. We’re calling our new trio KUZU and our new record, entitled Hiljaisuus, is out September 14th via Astral Spirits (though we’ll also have copies available at our August dates):

“KUZU is a hard-charging but patient trio that came together in the fall of 2017, after saxophonist Dave Rempis, a stalwart of the Chicago improvised music scene, worked with both Tashi Dorji (guitar) and Tyler Damon (drums) individually as part of a lengthy solo tour of the U.S. that he undertook in the spring of that year.  Dorji and Damon’s work as a guitar/percussion duo has become well-known, a highly refined and specific language developed through relentless touring and recording over the last few years, with a sound that straddles improvised music, rock, and any number of as-yet-undefined territories.  These two provide an incredibly fresh take on the possibilities inherent to spontaneous composition.  Superimposing Rempis into this mix was a logical next step after the relationships they’d forged individually.

Musically, these three create a highly focused pallet of sounds. At times, spacious gestures carve up the canvas with the austerity of a calligrapher, while at others those sparse gestures build into an unstoppable tsunami of energy.  Those waves are never impulsive or impetuous though, they ebb and flow logically and patiently out of simple and clearly defined sources.  This trio pursues every gesture with tenacity, passing them back and forth until they’ve explored every facet of an idea.”

Tashi & I also have a forthcoming duo cassette on Magnetic South called Soft Berm. This tape was recorded straight-to-cassette in glorious mono by John Anderson at Reverberation Vinyl in Bloomington, IL. Here’s a little taste of that performance as documented by Michael Mayer:

I’m also excited to announce the first new Open Sex LP in five years, White Horses, out September 7th on Louisville’s Sophomore Lounge records:

Artwork by Xerox the Kidd

“(Thee) Open Sex Music comes from a decade-long practice of reductive composition and improvisation. The group has encompassed over 20 artists lurking around punk and experimental music circles, interchangeably shifting from minimal tape purr, Hypnotist beat and proto-punk textures.

The most consistent participants, guitarist and sound tech John Dawson (Magnetic South Recordings) and percussionist Tyler Damon (Dorji/Damon Duo, Circuit Des Yeux), anchor the two side-long pieces on “White Horses” with their evolving language and repetitive form. They are joined by Ben Lumsdaine (Spissy, C&R House Band), Mark Tester and Landon Caldwell (both of Creeping Pink and Burnt Ones) whose electronic pianos hover overhead and dissipated into colored vapor.

Recorded and mixed by Cooper Crain, mastered by Mikey Young.”

Release shows are slated for Indianapolis at Hoy Polloy on August 30th and Bloomington, Indiana at the Blockhouse on August 31st. Details forthcoming…

Last weekend Circuit Des Yeux had some hometown dates with appearances at the Empty Bottle and at the Pitchfork Music Festival. Here’s an excerpt of what the Chicago Tribune had to say about the set:

“Best set of the weekend: I have no idea what a band is going to have to do to oust Circuit Des Yeux as set of the weekend. Conjure thunder? (…) Soft yet loud, this was a set that rocked harder than anything to date that weekend, the band part of the drama rather than mere accompaniment, setting Fohr’s amazing voice in bedrock. She cooed, moaned, screamed and bellowed, went deep, so deep with songs broad in scope, and nigh flawless in execution. Wow.”

Circuit Des Yeux has some dates scheduled through the end of the year, including a free show with Deerhunter at House of Vans in Brooklyn and some stateside performances of Haley’s re-imagined score to Charles Bryant’s 1923 film adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s Salomé:

Relocation / Circuit Des Yeux across the US Midwest/SE, Marfa Myths & Europe part 2…

Dorji / Damon / Rasmussen at the Hideout, Chicago. Photo by Julia Dratel.

Feeling fantastic after a series of dates with Tashi Dorji & Mette Rasmussen in mid-March; our hit at Chicago’s Hideout on the 18th marked my first night as a Chicago resident – thank you for the warm welcome! This move is something I’ve considered for a long time and I’m elated to ponder the potential of this decision.

Tashi & I both participated in Dave Rempis’ Exposure Series during this time and these concerts served as a shining example of what’s possible when major emphasis is placed on communion and collaboration among artists of diverse backgrounds. I’m grateful to to have been a part of this and it’s exciting to witness a commitment to socio-political ideas that foster a true sense of community in our creative world and beyond. I sincerely hope this is the new normal…

I also enjoyed a few solo dates opening for my Baltimore/DC comrades Heart of the Ghost in Indianapolis and Bloomington as well as a two-set quartet happening at the nearly-30 year-running Jazz Fables series at Bear’s Place in Bloomington with NYC’s Michael Eaton and Bloomington’s Kyle Quass & Jeff Greene.

A new release with Rempis, Dorji & Damon duo/trio hits, more CDY dates…

Dave Rempis and I have a new cassette out on Knoxville’s fresh Park 70 label entitled Full Yum. Dave & I recorded some impromptu cuts in the basement at Magnetic South with John Dawson back in November of 2016 and these two sides are the result. These tapes are offered in a very limited and presented beautifully in letterpressed heavy card stock wraps – Pick one up from Dave and I at a show or via the Park 70 Bandcamp page. Digital is also available via my Bandcamp page

Tashi Dorji & I have a brief stint of tour dates, a handful of which include our Danish comrade MR. Peter Margasak did a nice write-up in advance of our Chicago shows over at the Chicago Reader, noting that:

“…the music surges and recedes in thrilling fashion, yet beyond the explosions and decay lies stunning detail, such as the subtly shifting tom rolls of Damon or the altering tonal gradations in Dorji’s numbing chords and barbed single-note runs.”

– Friday, March 16th – trio w/ Tashi Dorji & MR @ St. John’s Episcopal Church (2600 Church St.), Cleveland, OH

– Saturday, March 17th – trio w/ Tashi Dorji & MR @ Ziggy’s (206 W. Michigan Ave.), Ypsilanti, MI

– Sunday, March 18th – trio w/ Tashi Dorji & MR @ The Hideout (1354 W. Wabansia Ave.), Chicago, IL

Additionally, we’ll play a few duo hits as well (*please note a couple of these are late-afternoon shows):

– Thursday, March 22nd – duo w/ Tashi Dorji @ 99.1 WQRT Noise-A-Thon hosted @ Listen Hear (2620 Shelby St.), Indianapolis, IN – 3:30PM*

– Thursday, March 22nd – duo w/ Tashi Dorji @ State Street Pub (243 N. State Ave.), Indianapolis, IN

– Sunday, March 25th – duo w/ Tashi Dorji w/ Brandon Lopez (NYC) @ Horatio N May Chapel (Rosehill Cemetary, Ravenswood Ave.), Chicago, IL – 2PM*

I also have a few solo shows coming up in support of my Baltimore/DC homies Heart of the Ghost and a quartet appearance in Bloomington at the decades-long weekly jazz series Jazz Fables:

– Tuesday, March 27th – solo w/ Heart Of The Ghost (Baltimore/DC), Rob Funkhouser @ Listen Hear (2620 Shelby St.), Indianapolis, IN

– Wednesday, March 28th – solo w/ Heart Of The Ghost (Baltimore/DC), C&R House Band @ The Blockhouse (201 S. College Ave.), Bloomington, IN

– Thursday, March 29th – quartet w/ Kyle Quass, Jeff Greene, Michael Eaton (NYC) @ Bear’s Place (1316 E. 3rd St.), Bloomington, IN

Lastly, I’m headed out on the road again after a very successful run on the US west coast and EU/UK dates with Circuit Des Yeux for some more Midwest & Southeast dates, a Marfa Myths appearance, and our second European tour of the year. Head over to the LIVE page for dates and details…

There’s A LOT more on the horizon or the year…more soon…

Be well! – Tyler

“Leave No Trace” available 2/2 & Circuit Des Yeux US west coast, EU & UK tours

Leave No Trace: Live In St. Louis, a companion live LP to Tashi Dorji & I’s 2016 debut LP, Both Will Escape, is out February 2nd. Check out the trailer below and visit Family Vineyard to preorder now. If you’re in the UK/EU, snag one from Boomkat, who had this to say about the record:

Grade A, live improvised guitar and drum roil from the inimitable Bhutanese string picker Tashi Dorji and superb, free-limbed percussionist Tyler Damon. It can be such a fine line between embarrassing onanism and anticipation-baiting, edge of seat improv, but luckily this pair fall squarely in the latter category. Feral, biting, wickedly unpredictable stuff on Loren Connors’ label.”

Circuit Des Yeux is headed out on back-to-back tours again beginning January 19th in Los Angeles. Check out the LIVE page for a full list of US West Coast, EU & UK dates…
